A heat pump system is an alternative to traditional heating and cooling devices. The heat pump consists of two main components: the air handler and the outdoor unit. The two units pump a liquid refrigerant in a cycle. In one direction, the liquid pulls heat from the outside and pushes it into the house. In the opposite direction, the liquid pulls heat from the house and pushes it outside.

How a Heat Pump Works

The heat pump system can actually pull heat from the outside even in freezing temperatures. This allows the system to heat the home in the winter. Inside the home, the air handler pushes air across the heated surface and through the home’s ductwork. Likewise, in the summer, the air handler pushes air across the cooled surface and out through the ducts.

So, a heat pump essentially directs heat from one space to another. In the winter, heat is directed into a controlled space. In the summer, heat is directed out of a controlled space.

Advantages Over Traditional Heating and Cooling

Heat pump systems are energy-efficient as they use electricity, not gas or oil, to heat the home. Because the heat pump moves heat instead of having to generate it, it uses considerably less electricity.

The heat pump can both heat and cool a home. A traditional HVAC system is typically paired with a furnace to provide heat.
